		<abstract>Studies made through the spectral characterization of the constituents of the rocks allow to identify sites favorable to the occurrence of lithologies for the subsequent identification in subsequent field stages. The objective of this work is to evaluate the use of the ASTER sensor image in the shortwave infrared band for the discrimination of calcite and gypsum in a portion of the Araripe Basin. The 6 bands of the ASTER level 1B sensor, positioned in the shortwave infrared band and gypsite and calcite reflectance spectral curves from the USGS spectral library were used. The atmospheric correction was applied and the following classifiers were applied: Principal Components Analysis - ACP; MNF (Minimum Noise Fraction); MTMF (Mixture Tuned Matched Filtering) and SAM (Spectral Angle Mapper). In both ACP and MNF, the results selected for the mapping of the studied minerals were associated to ACP1 and MNF1 in the case of calcite and to ACP5 and MNF5 in the case of gypsum. The SAM classifier showed very similar results for calcite and gypsum. The MTMF classifier showed very similar results in comparison to those resulting from the use of the SAM technique. The results derived from the application of the ACP and MNF techniques were superior to those derived from the use of SAM and MTMF classifiers. In the case of ACP and MNF techniques, gypsum calcite could be separately mapped. However, the results from the use of SAM and MTMF classifiers failed to separate these two mineral classes spectrally.</abstract>
